Faculty of ArchitectureThe vast majority of the studies on house price dynamics focus on either structural/locational/demographic variables in a cross-sectional setting (i.e., hedonic price modeling) or on the impact of macroeconomic fundamentals in a time series framework. In this work, we argue that both approaches fall short of providing adequate information as cross-sectional analyses largely ignore the macro-dynamics, whereas time series approaches fail to incorporate the cross-sectional dimension. Current work combines both dimensions in a panel framework and provides, in this way, a methodological contribution as well as more informative analyses as it captures the impact of a wide array of variables. Thus, this study examines the housing prices in Izmir/Turkey by adopting the above-mentioned dimensions with both panel and spatial panel regressions. The study area consists of 212 neighborhoods located in different districts of Izmir. The period of analysis covers 30 months between 2017 and 2019. As an outcome of the empirical analyses, both structural/demographic, and macroeconomic variables were found evidently important. Hence, it is understood that all dimensions (structural/locational/demographic, macroeconomic) should be incorporated into comprehensive modeling. Izmir Institute of TechnologyPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the levels of awareness of locals about conservation and cultural heritage, in order to develop suggestions and methods for them to participate in these processes. Design/methodology/approach: The method of research is based on face-to-face surveys, mainly questionnaires that were conducted with 1,200 local people. The data obtained was evaluated using the SPSS 25.0.0 V program. Findings: The results show that locals mainly find appropriate the assets that reflect their culture but disregard archaeological remains. The participation of locals in the conservation process will end up benefiting them economically. Social implications: It is currently accepted that effective conservation cannot be achieved unless its technical considerations are considered together with social and cultural aspects. Ensuring the participation of local people in the conservation process has proved to be important in the development of holistic and sustainable outcomes. In places, where multilayered cultural heritage exists and local residents are from different cultural backgrounds, a detailed assessment of cultural heritage perception that involves local people gains significance. Faculty of ArchitectureYellow patina formed on the stone surfaces of historical buildings, monuments, and archaeological structures due to weathering is considered a value of the building in the conservation of cultural heritage studies. Although yellow patina layers can be easily distinguished on white marble surfaces, it is not possible to distinguish them on the yellow travertine surfaces with the naked eye. It should be taken into account in yellow travertines as well as marble surfaces before conservation treatments of the stone. In this study, mineralogical and chemical compositions and the thicknesses of yellow patina layers formed on yellow travertine and marble surfaces in Aizanoi, Aphrodisias, and Hierapolis archaeological sites in Turkey were analyzed in order to constitute a conservation approach in the archaeological sites. In this respect, XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, and LIBS were used in the determination of compositions and thicknesses of yellow patina. Although LIBS analysis is a more convenient method to investigate patina layers on stone surfaces, this technique is not as well known as the others. Yellow patina layers contained calcium oxalate in the form of whewellite (CaC2O4.H2O). Their thicknesses were between 15 and 100 μm and should be protective against weathering on travertine and marble surfaces. Highlights LIBS analysis seems to be the most convenient micro-destructive method to estimate the thickness of the yellow patina layers on the marble and yellow travertine surfaces. The determination of the thickness of the yellow patina is critical to keep irreversible cleaning interventions, especially for the yellow travertines due to their similar colors. While designing a demountable RF, one should know the initial, in-process and final form of the RF. These processes require some specific geometric knowledge. There are some deficiencies about geometric properties in the previous studies about demountable RFs. In this study, the positions and the orientations of the nexors are found by using the Denavit-Hartenberg parameters. This information gives where the joints are placed, how they are oriented and take position according to one another. Besides, the influence of engagement length on the fan height and the base edge are analyzed. Thereby one will be able to find out how much space the RF covers with the known base edge. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe twenty-first century is called “the age of the metropolises and cities” as they become the predominant living environments of human beings. Nonetheless, metropolitan areas are more vulnerable, for their intrinsic nature is dense and interconnected. The experience from the COVID-19 crisis teaches us how an epidemic outburst has been generated by reducing habitat at the planetary scale, and how the quality of the environment even affects the diffusion of the virus. But what is the relation between Health and Nature in urban areas? Is this relation so evident? Within this study, a preliminary assessment of the relations between urban environment and health will be evaluated by modelling the spatial distribution of the Habitat Quality in Turin and the mortality rates in the same areas. Data will be gathered at their maximum spatial precision, thus obtaining a reliable map of the distribution between the two indicators at the district level. Habitat Quality will be composed by the value of the supporting biophysical function and anthropic threats. Health will be evaluated using the death number in the statistical units and the accessibility of citizens to green areas. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe city of Izmir (Turkey) has experienced one of the most rapid and fastest urbanization processes in the last thirty years; more than 33 thousand hectares of agricultural and seminatural land have been transformed into urban areas, leading to a drastic reduction of biodiversity and hard deployments of the ecosystem service supply. In this perspective, the potential definition of methodologies to design multifunctional green infrastructures is extremely important to challenge the effects of climate change. The aim of this study is to propose an easy and replicable methodology to design a Green Infrastructure at the neighbourhood level in one of the most important districts of Izmir: Çiğli. To this end, we combined historical land-use change analysis (based on Urban Atlas, Copernicus Land Monitoring Service) with environmental and ecosystem mapping in a Geographic Information System environment (ESRI ArcMap 10.8.1) while creating a composite layer based on unweighted overlays of Imperviousness, Tree Cover Density, and Habitat Quality. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis article discusses the possibility of developing an understanding of the concept of authenticity through the understanding of authenticity in architectural terms, specifically religious heritage buildings in areas of political conflict. Although authenticity has been a continuous subject of debate in the field of heritage studies, however, we argue that difficulties in coming to terms with its application in areas of conflict are still persistent. The study uses the case study of the Agios Synesios Church in North Cyprus, built around the Twelfth century, and is still in use by the Greek Cypriot minorities who continued to live on the island following its division in 1974 and the forced displacement of both Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities to either part of the island. Based on observation of the church and its surrounding context, the research shows that coming to terms with authenticity is problematic for the church since the prolongation of the Greek Cypriot way of life has been compromised due to political fluctuations. The argument suggests that once the authenticity of a religious building is assessed as a heritage asset, a flexible concept of authenticity is essential to consider in areas of political conflicts especially when its original context no longer exists.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 8Gendered Sense of Safety and Coping Strategies in Public Places: a Study in Atatürk Meydanı of Izmir(Emerald Group Publishing, 2022) Şenol, Fatma; 02.03. For better public policies, this study investigates multi-dimensional and multi-scalar aspects of gendered perceived safety and strategies by women and men in daily public spaces. Design/methodology/approach: A face-to-face survey with 40 men and 50 women in a public space (Izmir, Turkey) is deployed. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis compare participants' perceptions of and strategies for safety across the city, neighbourhood and the study site. Findings: Their experienced-based familiarities in public places increase women's perceived safety. As safety strategies, different place-based and gendered-preconditions appear for women and men going “outside” especially “alone” (i.e. unaccompanied). Reaffirming female vulnerability in public places, gendered preconditions include individuals' attributes. Of place-based preconditions, crowd and police are significant mechanisms for safety but emphasized differently by women and men. Housewives' female companionship in the study site develops a class- and gender-based claim for a safe place away from their underserved neighbourhood. Practical implications: Gendered- and place preconditions for women's safety can inform design policies about surveillance and permeability of public spaces. Lack of data about class-based differences about perceived safety is a limitation. Originality/value: Among a few, it takes perceived safety as performative acts with learned strategies across (rather than momentary perceptions in) socio-spatial spaces and provides a research framework that considers such acts with individual and spatial dimensions across multiple socio-spatial scales.Article Generating Plan Layouts: a Case Study on Visualization of Implicit Knowledge by “doctor Architects”(SAGE Publications, 2022-07) Kasalı, Altuğ; 02.02. Izmir Institute of TechnologyAim: This article presents an opportunistic case with particular focus on instances from an extended procurement operation in which medical professionals run a proactive process involving the generation of layouts through distinct modes of representational practices without any actual collaboration with designers. The questions of inquiry involve an analysis on how the visualizations came into being and a discussion into the content of drawings that was shaped by individuals without any formal design education. Background: Although the literature introduces examples of genuine participation, particularly in healthcare design practices, the instances in which nondesigners demonstrate accomplished skills in spatial reasoning and representation are limited. Method: The research was formulated as a qualitative case study including a series of observations of the activities of the participants followed by interviews recorded at different locations. The investigation also focuses on the features of these authentic graphics which illustrate the intentions of the medical professionals concerning the function of spaces. Results: In this research, the participants went through a labor intensive and elaborate effort to produce “architectural representations” with the intention to convey their implicit professional expertise in the domain. The layouts were introduced to be the vital elements to visualize the implicit knowledge regarding the functioning of space. Izmir Institute of TechnologyVarious Hellenistic masonry wall classifications have been given for Egypt, Greece, Persia, Phoenicia, Anatolia, etc., in literature. However, it is hardly possible to classify all masonry types in Anatolia because it varies regionally and has unique qualities. An important subject of research is what causes this diversity. Thus, this study aims to identify the original wall configurations and facings as well as the factors that define these structures by examining the undocumented walls in Anatolia's western and southern regions. Anatolian-specific composite techniques will be deciphered. The masonry techniques used in the walls of Caria, Lycia, and Pamphylia Regions, which are rich in examples of Hellenistic city walls, in the Western and Southern coasts of Asia Minor are compared in terms of their arrangement of blocks, wall profiles, and finishing of the faces. The first step of the method is a literature survey for determining the distribution of Hellenistic masonry walls in Anatolia. This was followed by a preliminary site survey. The dry-joint masonry walls that have sustained their authenticity and remain that have traces of their original composition were selected for accurate examination. Walls in Latmos, Alinda, Alabanda, Tekekale, Myndos in Caria; Sillyum, Side, and Perge in Pamphylia; and Oenoando and Isium in Lycia were examined. Their construction techniques and material usage were determined with the measured survey, visual analysis, and laboratory analysis. Also, the documented masonry patterns were compared with the masonry arrangements in different geographies of the world. Consequently, this study demonstrates that different masonry arrangements emerged in Anatolia as a result of varieties in the local environment. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe heterogeneous response of regions to interest rate shocks is a severe issue that reduces the effectiveness of monetary policy. While the impact of interest rate shocks is central on policymaking, less has been discussed about the spatial heterogeneity in influencing macroeconomic policy implementations. In order to fill this gap, the authors explore regional responses to monetary policy in developing countries, such as Turkey. The main aim of the paper is to investigate how different regions adjust the extent of real economic activity in response to an exogenous country-wide shock in the interest rate policy. The analyses cover 81 Turkish provinces using monthly data from January 2009 to November 2019. To consider temporal and spatial patterns in the same framework, time-series analyses via unit root, co-integration, and VAR with spatial methods have been combined, including exploratory spatial data analysis and spatial econometric models. Preliminary findings validate that regional economic activity measured by employment responses is heterogeneous across provinces and policy regimes. Among the different determinants in assessing responsiveness to monetary policy shocks, interest rate, broad credit channels, and certain regional demographics have explanatory power. Moreover, sizeable spatial spillovers have been detected, which are believed to be crucial in evaluating the externalities and the exact impact of the country-wide policy shock in Turkey. The design studio is a special course within the architectural curriculum, while the design itself is a structured process to accomplish a unique expectation of a product. The concept of sustainability in design is intended to ensure that the design product is in harmony with people and nature. The literature presented a lack of an instructive method of integrating sustainability into the design studio. This paper presents a comparison for the three executed consecutively experimental studies of integrating sustainability principles into the architectural design studio as well as presents a discussion of the experimental studios together with the evaluations and assessments. Also, it presents the post-course interviews' results, discussion, and conclusions. Regional spatial planning has been a locus of attempts to resolve these differences and realise policy integration, but its mechanisms to achieve this remain less explored. This study sets out to meet three objectives as follows: (1) to identify, through a systematic literature review, a broad set of mechanisms by which (regional) spatial planning realises joined-up policy making; (2) to illustrate the identified mechanisms in two distinct spatial planning systems, Germany and England; and (3) to generate insights into factors that contribute to, and confine, the identified mechanisms. Izmir Institute of TechnologyArchaeological sites located in metropolitan city centres in Turkey are subjected to diverse interventions. However, they are mostly isolated from the rest of the historical environment and become alienated from urban life. The aim is to identify an integration framework for archaeological sites in metropolitan city centres with contemporary urban life. A case study approach is employed, focusing on the Agora of Smyrna in İzmir, Turkey. Literature review on the case and similar cases, analysis of similar cases, literature review on integration criteria, survey, and a Delphi study to understand expert opinion were carried out. As a result, improving the quality of urban life and the good reputation of Agora’s vicinity, and the presentation, management, and usage of Agora itself support its integration. In this context, we have carried out the social network analysis (SNA), which allows an understanding of the network structure, social dynamics, trends, and the actors' effects in the network. According to SNA, Romania - Constanta Port, Bulgaria - Burgas Port, Ukraine - Chornomorsk Port, Russian Federation - Novorossiysk Port, Georgia - Batumi Port, and Turkey - Samsunport are the most prominent ports of the region. Faculty of ArchitectureThe design of movable systems gives an opportunity to create transformable designs which respond to the environmental, functional, cultural, and aesthetical needs of today's architecture. This paper proposes a method for designing a family of deployable structures which can be applied to semi-regular tessellated planar surfaces such as roofs, walls, and shading devices. The generated modular approach and adaptability provides a wide usage area and various combinations for these designs. The regular convex polygon modules are designed as a network of the triangular units. The triangular unit is designed using Bennett's overconstrained plano-spherical linkage topology. The polygonal modules are assembled to each other in one-uniform semi-regular tessellations. The assembly of adjacent regular convex polygons in each tessellation is examined to find a proper solution for no collision during deployment and to properly fit a surface without any gaps or overlaps in the deployed position. Faculty of ArchitectureThe architectural remains as well as sculptures, mosaics, and other artifacts in the archaeological sites are mostly made of stone and susceptible to biodeterioration by microorganisms. Bacterial communities are known to have the most effective role in biological deterioration in stones. The ancient city of Anazarbos (Anavarza), chosen as the study area, is the 1st Degree Archaeological Site in the vicinity of Dilekkaya Village, Kozan District, about 70 km north of Adana. The microbiological, chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of stone samples taken from different places were studied in this research. Samples were taken from i) where no deterioration occurred, ii) where different forms of deterioration were observed, iii) archaeological deposits, iii) archaeological deposits that came from deteriorated stone samples area. Spectroscopic, thermal, and microscopic techniques applied included: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive System (SEM-EDS), Thermogravimetric Analysis/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA). The bacterial biodiversity was analyzed by the application of Illumina-based next-generation sequencing methods. Results show intense biological colonisations with clay minerals on limestone surfaces. A patina of clay minerals was observed on newly excavated stone surfaces, while biological colonisations have not yet intensified. The metabarcoding analysis showed 15 bacterial phyla. The Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the most abundant phyla in both stones and archaeological deposits samples. Human activity (intensive agriculture, animal husbandry), accumulation of rainwater in excavated areas adversely affects stones, which leads to acceleration of biological deterioration in stones. Izmir Institute of TechnologyPublic fountains are very common and everyday people appreciate the benefits a water fountain can bring. However, consumption of public fountain water in some country has decreased because of growing concerns that constituents in fountain water may have adverse effects on health. A few studies have examined the safety of public fountains, proposing only limited evidence of fountain-related health issues in Turkey. Most of these public fountains are sourced from natural springs in Turkey. In this study, a 177 fountain water and 32 rock samples were analysed for source and quality of water. The geology of the region has the direct impact on the quality of the public fountain water. The results indicate that the level of some elements exceeded the limit values determined by WHO and US.EPA. There are, however, increasing calls in favour of a re-introduction of statutory comprehensive spatial strategies at the regional level to enhance integrated economic growth and address exacerbating spatial inequalities. Through a survey and in-depth interviews conducted with experts and policymakers of the North-West region of England, this paper explores whether the introduction of such statutory strategies could find justificative grounds through policy integration of transportation, housing, and employment policies. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study investigates the recent trend of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle and the underlying reasons for moderation in capital flows. This issue is analysed quite inadequately for the period after the Global Financial Crisis, which represents a crucial turning point for economic climate and policies. The Feldstein-Horioka Puzzle is estimated using the World's 13 largest economies, with panel GMM regression, between 1996 and 2016. We uncover that the Global Financial Crisis had a persistent detrimental effect on capital liberalization, after which the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle has revived and capital mobility has decreased. We suggest two possible explanations for such moderation in capital flows: the increasing risk perception and risk aversion behaviour of fund supplying countries, which increases the home bias, and capital controls against free flow of capital that have been applied after the Global Financial Crisis of 2008/2009.
