Design Discourse in Discount Shopping Context: Textual Analysis With Critical Studies Perspective and Deconstructionist Theory
(Intellect Ltd., 2024) Talu, Nilüfer; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
In consumption culture, individuals need things to update their selves or to repre-sent their identities. The more they update their belongings, the more they feel unsatisfied. In this cultural recycling, everyday objects become objects of desire, while the notion of design functions to create attraction. The problem originates in the disengagement of subjects–objects in which the capitalist economic system gets benefits sustaining the cycle of mass production-consumption. To get more benefit, this cycle is sped up along with discount shopping context. The study aims to produce a design discourse in discount shopping context in relevance of the issues of individuality and ethics. The method is a textual analysis with critical studies perspective and deconstructionist approach. The texts are the questionnaire transcripts written by fifteen women. Critical studies perspective clarifies power relations between capitalist economic system and consumer; and deconstructivist approach determines binary relations in relevance of individuality, and ethics and heterogeneity of the texts concerning to design. Along with these two approaches, textual analysis creates a discursive structure. The structure is used to generate a design discourse in which the meaning of design is situated. In this structure, design would be something in a specific heterogeneity and relations around the matters of individuality and ethics. The discursive structure is of importance that summarizes the method used and determines all coherencies around the definitions of design. This structure also could be a useful source for the production of other critical discourses on the relations of subjects–objects and the position of design in consumption culture. © 2023 Intellect Ltd Article.

A Narrative of an Ideological Destruction: Where Do We Go Now?
(University of Pittsburgh, 2023) Tunç Cox, Ayça; Aygün, Gamzenur; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Lebanese filmmaker, actress, and screenwriter Nadine Labaki’s 2011 film Where Do We Go Now? is about the ideological manipulation that gradually results in a big conflict among people in a rural Middle Eastern village where Muslims and Christians live in a peaceful existence. Labaki is known for her politically engaged narratives which refer to the recent political past of Lebanese whilst centralizing strong female figures. Where Do We Go Now? is no exception, and thus, reflects the director's general cinematic style and political attitude. Labaki invites her audience through the comedy to question ideology which interpellates and thus constructs the individual as a subject by revealing the ways ideology creates differences, separation, and conflict among people. In this context, this article strives to analyze the film Where Do We Go Now? employing critical discourse analysis with references to Althusser's conceptualization of ideology and Subject-subject formation. © 2023, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh. Co-Design With Children With Cancer: Insights From What They Say, Make, and Do
(Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, 2023) Örnekoğlu Selçuk, Melis; Hasırcı, Deniz; Tunç Cox, Ayça; 01.01. Units Affiliated to the Rectorate; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of Architecture
Being diagnosed with cancer is traumatic and life-changing for children. Due to the disease and treatment, children experience suffering, pain, interruption in school and playful activities, and separation from social and familiar environments. These negatively affect their quality of life (QOL). This article reports a co-design process conducted with children with cancer to shed light on their needs with regard to the play area furniture at the hospital to recommend design ideas that might improve children's QOL. The results have shown that a modular furniture system that can be customizable by children might contribute to their QOL - thanks to its adaptability to the needs of a wide range of age groups. In addition, there is a possible link between co-design sessions and children's well-being in terms of an increased sense of control, socialization and physical activities. For designers- who are the facilitators of co-design sessions with children- actively involving caregivers in co-design processes, co-designing the generative tools and the process with participants, and conducting observations and interviews to shape and complement the co-design sessions are advised. The findings of this study are expected to assist designers, co-design practitioners and healthcare members.

(University of Buckingham Press, 2022) Erkarslan, Özlem; Aşıcı, Burçin; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Herein, the importance of design methods for a company’s competence in the commercial world and the importance of integrating design into the product development process in the initial stages are discussed. Notably, driver environments on current boats are not ergonomically designed. Hence, this study aimed at designing a new driver environment with improved ergonomics and user experience that is aesthetically compelling to the market. This study is based on a user-centred design approach, which implies that all team members participate throughout the product development process to create design value for users by crafting innovative solutions that satisfy their requirements. Consequently, a new console, seating unit, and hardtop design that consider the importance of ergonomics, user experience, and manufacturability are developed. These elements are not only integrated in a user-friendly manner but also provide improved maintainability and productibility. © 2022: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

A Cluster of Surprise Egg Toys as Designed Objects at the Intersection of Design and Culture
(Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Talu, Nilüfer; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This study examines the cultural context of a cluster of surprise egg toys. The cluster contains 167 toys, collected between the years 1993 and 2015. The study methodology consisted of content analysis involving both qualitative interpretation and quantitative techniques. The interpretation is initiated with the toys’ physical materiality. Analysis is then developed on the compositional modalities of each toy, the place of each in the cluster, and the cluster as a whole. Qualitative interpretation and theoretical analysis of detailed descriptions and groupings of the cluster highlight the central themes found at the intersection of design and culture. Analysis of the cluster reveals that it carries the duality, or the tension, between modern and postmodern cultures with one elevating functionality and the other using storytelling as a means of creativity. They are designed objects and design things blending the two cultures in their physical content, and can be seen as artifacts that contribute to the value of design in everyday life within the context of mass culture. © Common Ground Research Networks, Nilüfer Talu, All Rights Reserved.

Individual Adaptation Determinants and Themes for Environmental Resilience
(IEEE, 2022) Kaplan, Gizem; Çorbacıoğlu, Eda; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
It is now an accepted fact that climate change is an event with increasing consequences and that we humans must do something about it. At this stage, the adaptation of individuals plays a key role. In this study, we searched for various behavioral theories and variables for our future study. With an S-question in-depth interview (7 people for sample size) and a survey of 68 actions (77 people for sample size), we investigated what subjects people tend to make changes in their daily lives. As a result, it has emerged that the tendency is to change the vehicles used in transportation. And the majority of the participants think that the partners who need to take action regarding the climate crisis are the service providers (states, NGOs, industry, and companies) rather than the consumers (individuals).

Assessment of Human-Robot Interaction Between Householders and Robotic Vacuum Cleaners
(IEEE, 2022) Yapıcı, Nur Beril; Tuğlular, Tuğkan; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 03.04. Department of Computer Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of Architecture
The study presented in this paper investigates the application of the Hybrid Model, which is the combination of the two strategies of the Built-to-Order Model and the Dynamic Eco-strategy Explorer Model, to robotic vacuum cleaners. The Hybrid Model aims to switch the market power from seller-driven perception to buyer-driven one by creating an individual perspective from the eye of users rather than traditional customer segmentation. The human-centered approach established theoretically has been tested with a determined procedure that includes prototyping, testing, and evaluating the proposed customization system for robotic vacuum cleaners to increase the interaction degree with purchasers. In this case, robotic vacuum cleaners have been chosen to implement and assess the hypothesis. Firstly, the successful prototyping of the Hybrid Model requires well customer analysis and habits determination to build well-constructed and coherent interaction between the purchaser and the robot. We utilized a content analysis of robotic vacuum cleaners and elaborative, conventional interviews with early adopters and early majority of this technology in Turkey to establish credible scenarios and product options during the phases of the Hybrid Model practice. The results of the interview were discussed, and the evaluations have been reported.

Application of Human-Robot Interaction Features To Design and Purchase Processes of Home Robots
(Springer, 2021) Yapıcı, Nur Beril; Tuğlular, Tuğkan; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 03.04. Department of Computer Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of Architecture
Production of home robots, such as robotic vacuum cleaners, currently focuses more on the technology and its engineering than the needs of people and their interaction with robots. An observation supporting this view is that the home robots are not customizable. In other words, buyers cannot select the features and built their home robots to order. Stemmed from this observation, the paper proposes an approach that starts with a classification of features of home robots. This classification concerns robot interaction with humans and the environment, a home in our case. Following the classification, the proposed approach utilizes a new hybrid model based on a built-to-order model and dynamic eco-strategy explorer model, enabling designers to develop a production line and buyers to customize their home robots with the classified features. Finally, we applied the proposed approach to robotic vacuum cleaners. We developed a feature model for robotic vacuum cleaners, from which we formed a common uses scenario model.

The aim of this study is to determine the anthropometric measurements of the users of outdoor fitness equipment and to re-design of an in-use outdoor fitness equipment according to these measurements. A total of 100 (50 male and 50 female) outdoor fitness equipment users, living in Eskisehir, Turkey, voluntarily participated in the study. Their ages ranged from 18 to 79 years and the mean of their ages were 31,2 (SD: 1,15277). The following human body dimensions were measured: stature, shoulder height, side-arm reach, fist (knuckle) height, forearm length, upper arm length, shoulder-fingertip length, knee height, malleolus height and hand length. The anthropometric measures of the adults and the outdoor fitness equipment’ dimensions were compared in order to identify any incompatibility between them. The data indicated a mismatch between the adults’ bodily dimensions and the outdoor fitness equipment available to them. Later on, in use fitness equipment’s motion output compared with biomechanical limits. Also, a mismatch was found between the motion output and biomechanical limits which might cause injuries. As these mismatches endanger public health, an outdoor fitness equipment, FE02 Stepper was re-designed according to its users’ anthropometric data and biomechanical limits as an example.

Artisans Meet Design: the Reception of the Turkish Handicraft Development Office in Turkey
(Oxford University Press, 2020) Emgin, Bahar; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Peter Muller-Munk Associates, an American industrial design firm, established the Turkish Handicraft Development Office in 1957 in Ankara as part of the US technical assistance program to developing nations. The aim of the program was to improve selected local crafts products in order to make them appealing for the American market. To this end, American designers and local craftspeople produced about 150 prototypes formed by creative combinations of meerschaum, copperware, ceramics, woodwork and basket weaving. When the office was closed in the early 1960s because of its failure to mass-produce the samples, it left behind a lively debate regarding the improvement of craft production and its relation to industrialization and economic growth. This article focuses on these debates to determine the place allocated to design within the discussions of crafts as a socio-economic activity. The article will focus on the reception of the design assistance program among the local actors to answer how Turkish crafts practitioners and officials perceived design, how the emergent concept of design was linked with handicraft and artisanal production, and how it took place as part of the agenda of economic and industrial development.

The Turkish-German Affair in Films: a Dreamworld or a Netherworld?
(Selçuk Üniversitesi, 2020) Tunç Cox, Ayça; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Turkish society’s perception of Germany has been going through a significant transformation. This is indisputably related with the crucial role Germany played by not taking sides with Turkey in its long-lasting attempts to access to the European Union. Through critical discourse analysis, this article explores how Turkish cinematic narratives have accounted for the thorny Turkish-German relations in the last two decades. The analyzed films, which are the products of the dynamic and heterogeneous new cinema of Turkey, have contributed to the knowledge produced about Germany, Germans and Turkish-Germans in the media. Therefore, focusing on these cinematic texts should reveal alternative modes of reading the enduring Turkish-German affair. As the close textual analysis has revealed, the films in question refuse the presumed label of “subaltern” for Turkey, and instead, provides a realistic and multifaceted account of said relationship.

Reading Sociocultural Contexts Through Photographs: a Case Study of Women Photographs, Taken in the Early Republic Period of İzmir
(2020) Yurt, Canberk; Türkmen, Doruk; Günduru, Beliz; Destici, Orkun; Aşıcı, Burçin; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The individuals reflect the socio-cultural, economic and political changes in their society with their appearances, like a mirror. From the late Ottoman period, through the declaration of the Republic, several modernization steps have taken place in Turkish society. During that period, photography has taken a crucial role in society, both as a profession and social innovation instrument, by being a representative of the societal changes. Through that, regulations such as Dress Reform and Women’s Suffrage Code, and western fashion have influenced women’s image and re-defined their roles in modern Turkish society. These reforms provided more self-confıdence and freedom to modern Turkish women. By that, the way women express themselves via photographs has been changed. This study aims to analyze the socio-cultural contexts, from the perspective of five randomly selected women photographs from İpek Cabadak’s private collection, which is named “Photographs Entrusted to the Future”. As a research method, iconographic visual analysis has been conducted, by considering social, historical and cultural incidents at that era, with the guidance of İpek Cabadak. Visual analysis of the selected photographs has been made based on some fashion clues, pre-iconographic data and historical facts from the early republic period. The analysis provides useful information about the roles and positions of Turkish women, their interactions and positionings among the society, in order to define the time and place those photographs have been taken and links between socio-cultural incidents. According to this study, photography can be considered a beneficial and efficient tool for visual analysis in historic socio-cultural studies.

Innovating service delivery in higher education by leveraging technology is central to supporting goals of transforming higher education to center on the needs of today's students. Aligned with these goals, this article identifies key determinants of student information technology adoption. Using a mixed-methods and empirical approach based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), a web-based survey was administered to undergraduate students at a public university in the Western United States to learn about their experiences with a web-based digital services platform (native mobile app and website), that aids students in accessing services and resources critical to maintaining their enrollment. Structural Equation Modeling, including Principal Components Analysis, was used to analyze 1841 valid survey responses and derive statistical results. The findings suggest that effort expectancy and social influence stand out as critical influences on behavioral intention to adopt the software for accessing university services, and new to UTAUT, that social influence and a students’ basic technology skills are significant determinants of effort expectancy. This article makes unique contributions to the research literature. It applies UTAUT to a higher education context to help explain the critical determinants of the adoption of software for accessing university services. It also provides insights for how UTAUT can be applied in the university setting and offers suggestions for enhancing UTAUT. IEEE
