Because of the large increase in sample resistance in going from transverse to longitudinal conduction, it was not possible to measure both geometries at the same temperature. However, the temperature trends are compatible with a common noise source. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn recent decades, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for land surveying became very popular because of their simplicity and low cost. Aerial images of the site can be used for the reconstruction of the site’s 3D digital model. Once proper calibrations are made, these digital models can be used for several purposes including stockpile volume estimation, stability analyses, forensic engineering and archiving, etc. In this study, the 3D model of an abandoned historical mine waste disposal site located in Balıkesir-Turkey was reconstructed for the estimation of the waste stockpile volumes. The historical mine site is a facility that was abandoned more than 80 years ago. Mine wastes of different quality were disposed of in and around the site along the hydrologically intermittent creek that passes through the site. No engineered precautions were taken at the site to reduce the environmental impacts and all waste piles were exposed to the natural eroding effect of precipitation and wind. The total amount of the waste volume is not known accurately, which prevents researchers to quantify the potential impacts associated with different waste stockpiles. Thus, a 3D digital model of the site was created by using UAV data obtained from a quadcopter and later processed to obtain a digital topography of the site with an improved accuracy value of ± 2 cm. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMature microRNAs (miRNAs) are short RNA sequences about 18–24 nucleotide long, which provide the recognition key within RISC for the posttranscriptional regulation of target RNAs. Considering the canonical pathway, mature miRNAs are produced via a multistep process. Their transcription (pri-miRNAs) and first processing step via the microprocessor complex (pre-miRNAs) occur in the nucleus. Then they are exported into the cytosol, processed again by Dicer (dsRNA) and finally a single strand (mature miRNA) is incorporated into RISC (miRISC). The sequence of the incorporated miRNA provides the function of RNA target recognition via hybridization. Following binding of the target, the mRNA is either degraded or translation is inhibited, which ultimately leads to less protein production. Conversely, it has been shown that binding within the 5? UTR of the mRNA can lead to an increase in protein product. Regulation of homeostasis is very important for a cell; therefore, all steps in the miRNA-based regulation pathway, from transcription to the incorporation of the mature miRNA into RISC, are under tight control. While much research effort has been exerted in this area, the knowledgebase is not sufficient for accurately modelling miRNA regulation computationally. The computational prediction of miRNAs is, however, necessary because it is not feasible to investigate all possible pairs of a miRNA and its target, let alone miRNAs and their targets. We here point out open challenges important for computational modelling or for our general understanding of miRNA-based regulation and show how their investigation is beneficial. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMacro-sized bacterial cellulose (BC) derived from Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans was down-sized into nanocrystals (BCNCs) through hydrochloric acid (H-BCNCs) and sulfuric acid (S-BCNCs) hydrolysis. Initially, aqueous dispersions of BCNCs were analyzed for stability, size/morphology, and optical/mechanical properties. Subsequently, BCNCs were incorporated into a main biopolymer phase (i.e., pullulan) to create bio-nanocomposite coatings with high-oxygen barrier performance. Upon treatment with sulfuric acid, nano-sized particles (approximate to 240 nm) were observed, contrasting with significantly larger sizes (approximate to 1.8 mu m) seen for particles obtained using hydrochloric acid. Microscopy analyses revealed a needle-like morphology of the nanocrystals, which appeared organized in stacks for H-BCNCs or as individual units for S-BCNCs. Pullulan/BCNCs coatings applied to polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) films improved the gas barrier performance of the original substrate, by dramatically reducing the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) values from approximate to 120 cm3 m-2 24 h-1 to approximate to 2 cm3 m-2 24 h-1 while preserving its original optical and mechanical properties. Our developed bionanocomposite-coated PET films hold potential as an alternative material for various food packaging applications. RTP protocol is chosen as the transport protocol and the network utilization is provided by increasing and decreasing the transmission rate of the RTP traffic. Our method employs a PID controller that keeps the RTP packet loss fraction at a predefined reference point. Packet loss fraction parameter is gathered from the RTCP receiver reports and fed into the PID controller that controls the transmission rate of the RTP traffic. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIntroduction: Connexins (Cx) play essential roles in cellular homeostasis by forming gap junctions and non-junctional hemichannels. In vitro characterization of Cx26 mutations causing keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome, were shown to form leaky hemichannels. The molecular/ cellular mechanisms affected by aberrant hemichannels have recently been elucidated. Here, we further wanted to characterize Cx26 KID syndrome mutations, D50A and A88V, which were shown to form aberrant hemichannels and remained unaddressed in the literature. Methods: Neurobiotin uptake assay in HeLa and N2A cells transfected with Cx26-WT, D50A or A88V verified the presence of aberrant hemichannels and immunofluorescent staining with fluorescent microscopy determined cellular localization of Cx26. Finally, intracellular calcium content was examined by using calcium indicator, Fluo-3AM, and flow cytometer. Results: Cx26-D50A and A88V mutations prevented the formation of gap junction plaques at cell-cell appositions and mutant proteins were observed to localize to the Golgi apparatus. Further, comparison of intracellular calcium content showed an increase in calcium amount in cells containing Cx26-D50A and A88V relative to Cx26-WT. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn approximate function generation synthesis methods, error between the desired function's output and designed mechanism's output oscillate about zero error while crossing the zero error margin at precision points. The common goal of these methods is to minimize the error within the selected working region of the mechanism. For mechanisms like Bennett overconstrained six-revolute jointed linkages that have relatively large number of construction parameters, it is a difficult task to solve for them at once. Decomposition method enables to divide such linkages into two loops and independently solve for each loop with less construction parameters. Although some approximation methods are proven to produce smaller errors than others for a single-loop synthesis, in this work, it is shown that smaller errors are not guaranteed for a certain method when used along with decomposition method. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study explores and analyzes recent design-driven innovation (DDI) practices in the furniture industries in Turkey and Sweden.2 The study was conducted in three phases: an in-depth literature review; the identification and selection of furniture companies; and analysis of the selected companies based on the strategic, operational, market-entry and organizational dimensions. We used case-study methods and conducted semi-structured interviews with designers and design managers of leading furniture companies from Turkey (Nurus, Ersa, Burotime, and Tuna Ofis) and Sweden (Offecct and Skandiform). Through cross-case analysis of national outcomes, we propose additional drivers to DDI theory, such as product segmentation, activity research, culture research and concept/designer research. The main aim of this study is to make important predictions and inferences for Covid 19, which is the current epidemic disease, with mathematical modeling and numerical solution methods. So we deal with the logistic growth model. We obtain carrying capacity and growth rate with Turkey epidemic data. The obtained growth rate and carrying capacity is used in the Taylor collocation method. With this method, we estimate and making predictions close to reality with Maple. Their significance is derived from the use of these spaces based on great numbers of people, as well as the role malls play in culture. On the other hand, the design of malls has been constantly evolving according to the needs of users and the market. This study is based on survey data that we collected from ninety visitors of a shopping mall located in Izmir, Turkiye. Through the survey, we collected data on topics such as the participants’ visit frequency and reasons for visiting the mall, architectural and spatial features they favor and/or dislike, their opinions on where they perceive malls in everyday life, and their opinions on alternative spaces to malls. The data collection was finalized right before the pandemic, which significantly changed the way we think about public spaces, as well as malls, in relation to architecture. Analyzing collected data provides further insight into surveyed customers’ perception of spaces, the design of shopping malls, the use of the space, the preferred design features, as well as design features that drive customers away from the mall. The analysis was later compared and linked to studies in the literature. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis paper proposes a hybrid method combining well-known holistic test and mutation testing in software testing for Graphical User Interface (GUI) testing of an android application. Moreover, this hybrid method satisfies requirements of ideal testing that is well known and important in software testing. Presence and absence of GUI based faults are tested within this work experimentally and comparatively in the scale of given or constructed model. First step of the method is modeling the given GUI of android application by Finite State Machine (FSM) and then converting this FSM to Regular Expression (RE). Then, test sequences are generated from a context table that is obtained analysis of the RE model. This process defines first part of the Holistic Testing namely positive testing. In second part called negative testing, the test sequence generation procedure is applied mutants of the FSM obtained after applying selected mutation operators. The generated test sequences from original and mutant models are executed on mutant and original android applications respectively. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis paper proposes an optimised model-free expectation maximisation method for automated clustering of high-dimensional datasets. The method is based on a recursive binary division strategy that successively divides an original dataset into distinct clusters. Each binary division is carriedout using a model-free expectation maximisation scheme that exploits the posterior probability computation capability of the quasi-supervised learningalgorithm subjected to a line-search optimisation over the reference set size parameter analogous to a simulated annealing approach. The divisions arecontinued until a division cost exceeds an adaptively determined limit. Experiment results on synthetic as well as real multi-colour flow cytometrydatasets showed that the proposed method can accurately capture the prominent clusters without requiring any prior knowledge on the number of clusters ortheir distribution models.
