Abstract: Çalışma kapsamında incelenen Küçükavulcuk Köyü, Batı Anadolu'da İzmir ili Ödemiş ilçesine bağlı olup, ilçenin önemli ve tarihi dokusu ile çarpıcı nitelikteki Birgi yerleşimine yalnızca 2 km. uzaklıktadır.
Examined within the scope of the study, the Küçükavulcuk Village is affiliated with the district of Ödemiş in İzmir province in Western Anatolia and located at a distance of only 2 km from the important settlement of Birgi, which is of striking quality with its historical fabric, in the district. Following the Metropolitan Law No. 6360, enacted in 2012, it administratively became a neighborhood of İzmir province. However, the settlement will be referred to as a village in this study. The study aims to scrutinize and document the settlement pattern and to develop proposals for the sustainability of the houses. The subject is addressed in the light of site surveys and the literature research. The Küçükavulcuk Village is a rural area in which the collective settlement order is seen, where the agricultural lands are located on the fringe of the settlement, and whose livelihood depends on agriculture and animal husbandry. Its proximity to Birgi, which used to be the capital city of Aydınoğulları Principality, facilitates the transportation possibilities. Nevertheless, the recent experience of a water problem has been reducing the agricultural product range and migration from the village takes place. This causes the houses to remain empty and, when they are not used, to wear and disappear rapidly. The settlement reflects simpler architecture than Birgi but the traditional houses of a high quality. In Küçükavulcuk, the houses are generally two-storey buildings and the downstairs includes service spaces such as stable and granary, whereas the upstairs serves as living floor. A planning scheme with an open outdoor hall (sofa) is mostly seen on the living floor, and a connection with the hall (sofa) from the downstairs is provided by means of an outdoor or an indoor staircase. The construction system of the houses is masonry downstairs but studwork with mud plaster upstairs. Besides the non-survival and abandonment of the houses, the alterations which are made in order for them to answer the current living conditions but which damage their originality threaten the sustainability of the buildings by maintaining their characteristics. In the study, it is suggested to use ecotourism as a means in the context of maintaining the settlement and the houses and of conveying them to the future.
